Flying from Tucson to San Diego - in a Miniskirt

There can't be too many folks reading this travel blog who don't know the story of Kyla Ebbert, the Hooters waitress who was booted off a Southwest Airlines flight for wearing an outfit that would get her kicked out of her workplace for being overdressed. She has certainly had more than her 15 minutes of fame.

Ebbert even had a copycat in Setara Qassim. Within reason, airlines can require whatever they want with respect to acceptable attire, if you ask me, and passengers can choose to fly with them or not. However, if Southwest wants to enforce a dress code, they should have one in the first place, or at least be consistent — note that Ms. Ebbert got past both the check-in agent and the gate agent without any complaint about her attire.

The Best Beaches in the World

Where would you find the best beach in the world? Is it Copacabana, or somewhere in Australia or on Hawai? Or should you fly all the way to Pukhet, Thailand to find golden sand and palm trees?

According to one of our readers, Frank, the best beaches he ever saw were in Florida.
"We've been to lots of beaches, from South Carolina to Alabama to all over Florida, and by far our favorite beach is Cape San Blas, FL. It's a little piece of 'Old Florida' in the Panhandle! It's a 20-mile-long peninsula with the bay on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other, and 10 of the 20 miles is all St. Joseph Peninsula State Park! There are no high-rises allowed on Cape San Blas, so the beaches are not crowded and it's white sand as far as you can see."

The Different languages of South America

I just came across a very interesting study about the different languages that are spoken in South America. My first reaction was to think of Spanish, then Portuguese, and then some smaller indigenous languages.

But the results were more interesting.

Portuguese is the most spoken language in South America. It is the official language of Brazil, which holds about 51% of the South American population. Spanish is the official language of most countries of the continent. Dutch is the official language of Suriname; English is the official language of Guyana , although there are at least twelve other languages spoken in the country such as Hindi, Arabic, Portuguese and various indigenous dialects. English is also spoken in the Falkland Islands. French is the official language of French Guiana.

From Stockholm to Turku on a Christmas Eve

Once upon a time, a long long time ago, I traveled from Stockholm to Turku on a Christmas Eve. The boat trip was included in my InterRail ticket, and the first thing I noticed was that there were no real cabins, just some compartments where you could sleep. The night boat had a reputation with party people, but what I experienced that night went beyond my wildest imagination.

Everybody looked drunk, people were making love in their compartment (it looked like a train compartment but without doors or other means of privacy) and you can imagine I didn't sleep a wink.

Outside it was freezing cold, but inside it was hot like hell

And you, what is your most memorable boat trip?

Tips for Travelling Light

8 Tips for Packing and Traveling Lite

In this day and age of traveling cephalalgia, there are a few packing tactics to employ. To cut out an extra thirty to forty minutes at the arriving airport, start with packing small luggage. Since carry-ons can not exceed a linear dimension of 45 inches, you can escape the fiasco of the baggage terminal by simply packing and traveling light. To learn how to pack all your needs into one suitcase, read more.

Use the following pithy packing tips to make your travel light:

Free Geography Quiz

In Facebook I found a nice geography quiz. But since many people do not like to create a Facebook profile because of security and privacy reasons, I went looking for some free geography quizes that do not require installation or registration.

One of these is called Test your Geography Knowledge. It gives you a list of all the possible quizes (sorted by continent) and is a great help to learn where all the Continents, countries, oceans and capitals are.

Just give it a try. I tried the Asia quiz, and scored 79 out of 96. Can you do better without cheating?
